"Every time I come out of a classroom my notebook is full of notes. Not about theories, but about real strategies and steps towards improving my performance as a manager and the various aspects of my role: whether managing people, creating marketing plans, putting together a yearly budget, analysing and implementing our company mission in an ethical way.

After each weekend I want to share my new ideas with my team, implement new direction in my department, and view my own performance in a different light. I must be a headache to the Directors of the company with all these new ideas – every semester teaching me new things in a different area.

What has improved after one semester? My perspective on the way I do business, the way my company does business... the ethics of our marketing strategies.... I started to see other stakeholders to our business and not just our customers for example. In terms of financial responsibilities in my role I see the bigger picture, I understand why I have to produce the yearly budget, how these fit into the whole company, and not just my department. I can ask relevant questions about my company performance (and our competitors) by looking at our accounts.

This semester we look at HR for example: after first class I see this is exactly what the doctor ordered. With very small HR function within the company we as managers are often asked to perform functions that would normally be done by HR in larger corporations. In my case I have to recruit and select people for my team, I have to motivate and lead them, and I have to do the appraisals – now I will learn exactly how to do that well, avoiding pitfalls such as discriminatory behaviour and grounds for legal action.

I’m excited and looking forward to discovering other areas of business too – I will come out at the end of it with a very good understanding of who I am professionally, why I do the things I do at work, and how my performance and the business I work for impacts the society as a whole: from my staff and clients, to their families, their friends, their choices, their lives and the lives of their community...to the whole global village – see you there!"
