Overview
Grammar and Vocabulary takes place before you start your undergraduate or postgraduate course of study. You may not begin your undergraduate or postgraduate course of study while attending this course. This course is designed to help you with your understanding of English grammar and vocabulary. It will help you develop your ability to analyse grammar in context and expand your knowledge of vocabulary so that you may become more confident and accurate in your use of the English language. It will concentrate on areas of grammar and vocabulary in the form of revision and analysis. Classes consist of no more than 12 students and are streamed according to level. Students can expect to progress at approximately 1 IELTS band per term.
Upon successful completion of the programme students progress to the English for Academic Purposes Programme where they will complete their English Language preparation, before entering the Business Programmes.
 
Programme Structure
 
 Grammar and Vocabulary :
   Topics  Grammar + Study and writing skills
 Communication  The Continuous aspect. State verbs. The Perfect aspect +Note-taking.
 Writing and checking e-mails.
 The Environment  Present Perfect Simple and Continuous. Indirect Questions + Designing
 a questionnaire and Writing a questionnaire
 Sport  Quantifiers. Definite and zero articles + Understanding essay questions.
 For and against essays
 Medicine  Future continuous and present continuous. Predictions future perfect will
 + Evaluating resources on the internet. Writing short reports.
 Transport      Modal verbs + Describing graphs charts and tables. Describing
 information in a table
 Literature  Narrative tenses: past simple, past continuous, past perfect simple and
 continuous + improving listening skills. A travel blog.
 Architecture  The Passive+ identifying fact and opinion and avoiding repetition.  
 Globalisation  Verb patterns + summarising: topic sentences and paraphrasing  
 Art  Ungradable adjectives. Position of adverbs in a sentence + An online
 review.  
 Psychology  Relative clauses, comment clauses, use of prepositions. Reduced relative
 clause + writing a bibliography and referencing
 Culture  Reported Speech. Reporting verbs + Improving reading speed: chunking  
 Technology  Conditionals: 1st, 2nd 3rd and mixed + Plagiarism: what is it and how to
 avoid it? An article
 
Entry Requirements
This course is for students with an IELTS band between 4.5 and 5.5 or equivalent. Students are placed onto this course of study as a result of their marks on the TASMAC language assessment test.
